Trying to keep the lights on
This is the Ticonderoga High School in northern New York. Remember Fort Ticonderoga from history class? Troops under the command of Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold took it from the British in 1775. It was a pivotal victory.
Now, the town is trying to save its school. It’s not that anyone wants to tear down the building or leave it. The problem is the school district’s debt, now nearly $2 million.
Teachers are being laid off and students could be transferred to other districts. Lots of people in the area believe - justifiably - that if their town loses its school, it will also lose families. In this scenario, the last domino falls in a ghost town.
